Spotify has officially unveiled Messages (DM), a brand-new feature that allows users to share their favorite songs, podcasts, and audiobooks directly with friends and family—all within the Spotify app. Currently rolling out in select markets on mobile devices, this update is designed to make sharing music more personal while opening up new opportunities for creators.
A New Way to Share on Spotify
With Messages, Spotify goes beyond playlists and social integrations, creating a space for one-on-one conversations. Whether you’re vibing to a track, laughing at a podcast, or immersed in an audiobook, you can instantly share the moment by tapping the share icon in the Now Playing View, selecting a friend, and hitting send.
Once a friend accepts your message request, you can:
- React with emojis
- Send a Text.
- Seamlessly share Spotify content back and forth
Messages can be accessed by tapping your profile photo in the top-left corner of the app. Spotify will also suggest people to message based on interactions like shared playlists, Jams, Blends, or if you’re on the same Family or Duo plan.
A Boost for Artists and Creators
For artists, authors, and podcasters, Messages open new doors for organic discovery. With fans being able to recommend tracks and episodes more easily, creators stand to benefit from word-of-mouth growth in ways that feel authentic and direct.
Privacy and Safety First
Spotify emphasizes that users remain in control of their conversations. You can accept or reject message requests, block users, or opt out of Messages entirely through Settings. To maintain safety, Spotify enforces its Terms of Use and Platform Rules, with easy reporting options for harmful or inappropriate content.
All conversations are safeguarded with industry-standard encryption both in transit and at rest, ensuring user data remains protected. Additionally, Spotify uses proactive detection technology to flag unlawful or harmful content, alongside moderation reviews to maintain a secure sharing environment.
What’s Next?
Spotify describes Messages as just the beginning. With a focus on making content sharing more meaningful and social, the company plans to refine and expand the feature to more users worldwide in the coming months. Whether you’re recommending a new Afrobeats hit to your bestie or sharing a motivational podcast with your sibling, Spotify Messages makes it easier than ever to connect through the content you love.
